Narbir Singh defeated the veteran Rao Inderjit Singh in 1987 and became the youngest home minister of the state at the age of 26. He also held the portfolios of Transport, Food and Civil Supplies and Cooperation in successive governments.
Singh was also the PWD and Forest Minister in the first term of the Khattar government from 2014-2019.
Senior BJP leaders Rao Inderjit Singh and Anil Vij have said that they will claim the post of chief minister if the party forms the government in the state. However, Narbir Singh has no such ambitions.
“The central leadership has already announced Nayab Saini as the chief minister's face. I don't think they will change it now. I am not in the race. Many years ago I tried to become the chief minister but now “I don't have any misunderstanding. I want to focus on Gurugram and I am in the race for the ministerial post,” he told PTI in an interview.
Narbir Singh (63) had announced last month that if he is not fielded by the BJP this time, he will contest as a Congress candidate from the constituency. At this moment, a citizen is suffering from the mess. We have the highest waterlogging, the worst roads and traffic crisis and the city has been turned into a garbage dump, the last five years have not only brought the city to a standstill but reversed the pace of development.” Jannaik Janata Party led by Dushant Chautala formed an alliance in October 2019 which broke up in March 2024.
“I blame the alliance for this (urban problems in Gurugram). We had a majority government from 2014 to 2019 and one can question the pace of development but since 2019 things have gone downhill. It was our alliance with JJP that is blamed.
He further said that the Department of Urban Infrastructure was with JJP and they did nothing and people are disappointed that nothing has been done even though it is under the management of BJP.
About the party's earlier promises to turn Gurugram into Singapore, Singh said, “I never said that I will turn Gurugram into Singapore. Let Gurugram be Gurugram but that is not the case in the state today.”
Severe waterlogging, suffocating traffic, dilapidated roads and garbage piles are major problems in the constituency with over 5.2 lakh voters.
“I have drawn up a plan for an efficient drainage system in the low-lying areas of Gurugram to avoid pooling of water and zone-wise collection and treatment of garbage to avoid accumulation of garbage at one place. Government and hopefully in the next two years we can solve these two problems,” he said.
“Traffic is a huge mess. 10,000 new private cars are registered in Gurugram every two months. This rapidly increasing volume of vehicles is one factor but the poor condition of the roads is another.
He said, “We need at least 20 signal-free underpasses in the city to control traffic within Gurugram and as far as going to Delhi is concerned, only one elevated road from Dhola Kuan to Manesar is available.” There is a solution.”
“(Union) transport minister Nitin Gadkari is also aware of the Delhi-Gurugram situation and we have discussed it earlier. I will make a formal request for an elevated road after the elections,” he added.
Singh is pitted against Vardhan Yadav of Congress in this constituency. Badshahpur MLA Rakesh Daulatabad's wife Kamudni Daulatabad is also in the fray.
Polling for 90 assembly constituencies in Haryana is scheduled for October 5 and the counting of votes will take place on October 8.
