Just hours after Paramount Network revealed the return date for the final episodes of 'The Secret Service', the network said in a statement that, “This is something that viewers will not enjoy.” YellowstoneKevin Costner ended all speculation about his possible return by announcing via social media that he is, in fact, back. I am not coming back.
“An update for you guys. I'll see you at the movies,” he began his video post on Instagram.
“I wanted to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that needed to be done and thinking about Yellowstone, that lovely series that I love, that I know you love too, I just realized that I'm not going to be able to continue on with season five B or in the future,” he said. “It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I won't be coming back and I love the relationship that we've been able to develop and I'll see you in the movies.”
Earlier on Thursday, Paramount revealed that the second half of the fifth and final season of the Taylor Sheridan series would premiere Sunday, November 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The announcement made no mention of whether Costner's John Dutton would appear in those final episodes; instead, fans had to look to recent interviews with Costner to see if he'd revealed anything about the character. “I read all the stories,” he said. “I was disappointed that no one on their behalf ever stepped up to defend what I actually did for them. There was a moment when I thought, 'Wow, when is someone going to say something about what I have and haven't done?'”
Costner also said he'd be willing to come back to finish the job. Yellowstone saga, but it will be subject to certain conditions.
“I've always felt that…it could be an interesting moment to come back and complete this Modern Family mythology,” he said. “And if that happens, I'd step in if I agreed with how it was being done.”
On June 17, Costner told Today that he had not locked the door when he came back Yellowstone. “First of all, I did it for five years, OK, and I want to work more than once a year. There was a point when we lost a whole year and I thought, ‘Well, that can never happen again.’ It ended up being more than a year.”
And in May, Costner told Deadline's Mike Fleming that he had signed a contract to play Dutton in seasons five, six and seven. He promised he would remain in the role.
“After two or three months of negotiations, they did another contract,” he said at the time. “They wanted to rework that contract, and instead of a sixth and seventh season, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we’d do a sixth season. They weren’t able to make them. Horizon was established in the middle, but Yellowstone I was in first place. I am fit [Horizon] They just kept extending their interval.
Costner said he upheld the “truth of the contract.” He said he never shot the second half of season five because “there was no script. And then things went awry.”
The explosion happened around February of 2023, when Deadline reported that Sheridan's top-rated drama was set to end in a spectacular fashion. The plan was to end Paramount's signature show in its current form and plan a franchise extension starring Matthew McConaughey.
The surprise announcement was made due to differences over Costner's filming schedule, though at the time Paramount tried to avoid the reveal by saying “Kevin Costner is a big part of the movie.” Yellowstone And we expect that to remain the case for a long time to come. Paramount has not yet revealed any further details about the spinoff. It also hasn't said how many episodes fans can expect in the end Yellowstone.
