Highest score, fastest century and 3 centuries in the World Cup: South Africa’s dominance in the first match of CWC23 against Sri Lanka

New Delhi,Updated: October 7, 2023 18:28 IST

South Africa took an early lead by scoring 428 runs for 5 wickets in 50 overs in the first match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka in New Delhi on Saturday. Centuries from Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen helped the Proteas demolish the Sri Lankan bowling line-up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

South Africa broke several records during their stormy innings after Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to field first on a hot day in the capital city.

SA vs SL, World Cup 2023 Updates

South Africa made the highest score in a World Cup match, surpassing Australia’s 417 for 6 against Afghanistan in Perth in 2015. As the sixes continued to be hit, South Africa went past the previous mark by a considerable distance.

South Africa’s batsmen hit 45 fours and 14 sixes, while Dasun Shanaka looked clueless and unable to handle his injury-hit bowling attack in Delhi.

Highest total in World Cup

428/5 – South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 2023, New Delhi
417/6 – Australia vs Afghanistan at Perth in 2015
413/5 – India vs Bermuda at Port of Spain in 2007
411/4 – South Africa vs Ireland at Canberra, 2015
408/5 – South Africa vs West Indies at Sydney, 2015

The high score was possible because their three batsmen looked to be in complete control of the Sri Lankan bowling attack. Standing at the forefront was Aiden Markram, who came in the middle in the 31st over and then scored the fastest century ever in a World Cup match.

Markram completed his century in just 49 ballsBroke Kevin O’Brien’s record of 50 balls against England in 2011.

Fastest ODI World Cup century

49 – Aiden Markram vs Sri Lanka, Delhi, 2023
50 – Kevin O’Brien vs England, Bengaluru, 2011
51 – Glenn Maxwell vs Sri Lanka, Sydney, 2015
52 – AB de Villiers vs West Indies, Sydney, 2015

This was the first time in a World Cup match that 3 batsmen from one team scored centuries in an innings. This is only the fourth such instance in ODI cricket.
