House-sized asteroid set for close encounter with Earth; Know the details

Asteroids are giant space rocks that move in their orbits in space. According to NASA, some of these ancient space rocks present a potential danger of colliding with Earth while others may help discover the secrets of space. While most of them are located in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars, these rocks often come close to Earth as their orbits bring them within a few million kilometers of our planet. This presents a danger – could these space rocks somehow reach Earth? History has taught us that this is certainly possible. This can happen when an asteroid deviates from its path due to the gravitational pull of a larger planet. Their orbits can also bring them very close to the Earth.

In a new development, NASA has highlighted the details of an asteroid that is expected to make its closest approach to Earth today. Know its speed, size, reaching distance and more.

Asteroid 2023 SF6

NASA monitors asteroids, comets, and other near-Earth objects (NEOs) for potential close approaches that could threaten Earth. The space agency has issued a warning against an asteroid that will come very close to Earth today, September 27. According to the details, the asteroid, named Asteroid 2023 SF6, will pass by the Earth at a distance of only 1.4 million kilometers. Although this asteroid is not planet-killing, it is still larger than the Chelyabinsk asteroid that caused heavy damage in 2013. Its estimated width is approximately 62 feet, making it approximately the size of a house.

The asteroid will not only pass close to Earth, but it will also be moving towards us at extremely high speed. NASA has revealed that asteroid 2023 SF6 is heading towards Earth at a speed of 62548 kilometers per hour!

other details

The space agency also revealed that it belongs to the Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids, which are space rocks that orbit Earth with semi-major axes larger than Earth’s. These asteroids are named after the giant 1862 Apollo asteroid, discovered by German astronomer Carl Reinmuth in the 1930s.

The surprising thing is that this will be the first time in history for asteroid 2023 SF6 to come closest to Earth. According to NASA’s Small-Body Database lookup, it won’t get any closer in the near future.
