Beryl is the first hurricane in fifty years to form in the Atlantic basin before July 4. According to Weather Underground, Alma hit the Florida Keys on June 8, 1966.

Which way is the hurricane barrel headed?

As of Sunday morning, Barrel was located about 420 miles east-southeast of Barbados, moving west at 21 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It had maximum sustained winds of 115 mph.

The center of the barrel was forecast to pass about 26 miles south of Barbados, Sabo Best, director of the island's weather service, told the AP.

CBS News weather producer David Parkinson said June's Hurricane Barrel was the furthest to the east. Only one other hurricane formed this far east in June – and that was in 1933.

Hurricane Barrel became a Category 3 storm on Sunday. This is the predicted speed of the storm.


Barrel's center is expected to move across the Windward Islands — which include Grenada, Martinique, St. Lucia, Dominica and St. Vincent — by Sunday night or early Monday, according to the hurricane center, with “deadly Winds and storms will bring surges.”

According to the hurricane center, Beryl is forecast to become a major hurricane before reaching the Windward Islands. By Saturday evening, the barrel was there. Category 3, which is a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 111 mph or greater. This makes it a major hurricane.

Where will Hurricane Barrel bring rain and flooding?

Between 3 and 6 inches of rain and storm surges of up to seven feet are forecast for Barrel, Barbados and the Windward Islands.

Up to 6 inches of rain is expected in St. Vincent. Martinique, Grenada and Dominica are expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of rain. Barrel is expected to bring deadly winds and storm surge to the Windward Islands starting Sunday night.

Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada and the Grenadine Islands are all under hurricane warnings. Martinique and Tobago are under a tropical storm warning, while Dominica is under a tropical storm watch.

Any U.S. impact is still at least eight days away and the barrel is expected to remain south of Jamaica, Parkinson said.
