Hyderabad News: Can BJP's Madhavi Latha unseat Asaduddin Owaisi from AIMIM stronghold in Phase 4 polls today?


The Hyderabad constituency is one of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana that will go to polls in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Monday, May 13.

Sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is up against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Madhavi Latha from this seat. The saffron party has fielded a woman candidate from the Hyderabad seat for the first time.

Congress has fielded Muhammad Waliullah Sameer while BRS has fielded Gadam Srinivas Yadav from Hyderabad seat in 2024 general elections.

A stronghold of Owaisi

This seat has been the stronghold of the All India Majlis Ittehad Muslimeen (AIMIM) for the past four decades. Owaisi has won the seat four consecutive times since 2004. Before him, Owaisi's father, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, represented the Hyderabad seat in the Lok Sabha for six consecutive terms from 1984.

Owaisi had won the seat by a margin of over 2.80 lakh votes in the 2019 elections with around 64% of the total votes polled.

Who is Madhavi Latha?

This time, however, Asaduddin Owaisi faces a formidable challenger in BJP's Madhavi Latha, who is making her debut.

Latha, 49, was not much known in political circles until March 2, when her name was included in the BJP's list of candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Political Science from Osmania University.

Latha is also an entrepreneur, NCC cadet, and a professional Bharatanatyam dancer. She is the Chairperson of Varenchi Hospitals in Hyderabad. Latha termed her candidacy as recognition of her nearly two decades of philanthropic work.

During her campaign, Madhavi Latha vowed to defeat Owaisi at his home. The AIMIM chief, however, expressed confidence in securing a record fifth term in Parliament from Hyderabad.
