Hyundai unveils Initium Hydrogen Concept: Hyundai Motor Company on Thursday unveiled its latest hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept, named Initium, at the Hyundai MotorStudio Goyang as part of its “Clearly Committed” initiative. The concept vehicle represents the South Korean multinational automotive manufacturer's goal of becoming a leader in clean energy transportation. Initium, which translates to “beginning” in Latin, symbolizes Hyundai's leading position in hydrogen technology.
Introduction to the “Art of Steel” design language: The Initium is the first model to feature Hyundai's new design language, known as the “Art of Steel”. The design, described as both urban and outdoor-capable, includes a sturdy frame, 21-inch wheels, and a roof rack for added versatility. Hyundai's global design chief SangYup Lee said the design embodies Hyundai's goal of “customer-centric design” through an SUV look that blends safety with solid looks.
Expected production by 2025: The production version of Initium is planned for release in the first half of 2025. Hyundai will showcase the concept at both the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November. With Initium, Hyundai aims to advance hydrogen technology into the mainstream market.
High range and advanced performance: Equipped with aerodynamic wheels and low rolling resistance tyres, the Initium aims for an extended range of more than 650 km on one fuel, which would surpass the range of Hyundai's first hydrogen-powered Nexo. Hyundai's advances in fuel cell technology have increased the battery capacity and motor output to 150 kW, making it practical for daily driving as well as long trips.
Family Friendly Interior Design: Designed with family use in mind, the Initium offers a spacious interior, with reclining second row seats and a wide door opening for convenience. Hyundai claims it prioritized comfort and ease of accessibility, making the SUV suitable to serve as a primary family vehicle.
Route planner for hydrogen refueling: To address the challenges of refueling infrastructure, Hyundai said the Initium includes a route-planning feature that helps drivers locate hydrogen stations without the need for separate apps or phone calls.
