Illinois police charge man with hate crime after shooting neighbor

An Illinois man accused of attempted murder has now been charged with a hate crime after police say he shot and wounded his neighbor in Lockport Township on Tuesday.

John P. Shadbar, 70, was arrested after allegedly shooting a 45-year-old woman, who remains in critical condition, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office. He is being kept in jail without bail.

Court records show Shadbar is charged with nine felonies, including hate crime, aggravated battery, criminal damage to property, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

After the shooting, Shadbar went into his home, about 45 miles southwest of Chicago, where he barricaded himself in, the department said on Facebook. A crisis negotiator over the phone convinced them to come out with their hands up. He was taken into custody and questioned at the sheriff's office.
