Illinois veterans homes increase safety measures as COVID-19 cases rise

Illinois Veterans Homes in LaSalle, Manteno and Quincy are seeing a rise in COVID-19 cases among their veterans and staff, and the vast majority of cases have resulted in mild symptoms.

As of August 27, 36 people have tested positive for COVID-19:

LaSalle: three residents and nine staff

Manteno: two residents and one employee

Quincy: nine residents and 12 staff

“Illinois’ five Veterans Homes are constantly monitoring their staff and residents for symptoms of COVID-19 and all infectious diseases,” said IDVA Director Terry.

“COVID-19 cases have surged across the country, and IDVA’s robust testing and infection control efforts have minimized the spread and ensured the safety of the veterans in our care and our staff.”

“IDPH is pleased to support IDVA’s efforts to prevent and address disease outbreaks in Illinois veterans’ homes,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.

“IDPH Regional Infection Control Coordinators have been in close contact with IDVA staff at these affected homes, providing assistance and support over the past week. We are committed to using our public health expertise and resources to protect veterans living in IDVA homes and the staff who care for them.”

All homes will continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) infection control guidelines for long-term care facilities.

IDVA is encouraging residents to remain in their rooms to minimize movement, maintain social distancing, use masks in direct care areas, and intensify cleaning and disinfection protocols.
