Immediate reaction: Atletico Madrid 3-1 Real Madrid

atlético madrid 3-1 real Madrid (Cruz). Defeat in the derby. Here is my response. Still to come: player ratings, post-game questions and Madrid-based content from Lucas and Kylian.

With the help of a little luck, Real Madrid have won every single game so far this season. Apart from Real Sociedad, they have barely faced any significant challenges so far. Atletico Madrid will hand them their biggest hurdle of the season so far. Toni Cruz and Luka Modric both started in midfield, with Lucas Vazquez and Fran García deployed at full-back. Joselu Mato started life on the bench despite his recent goals. Aurélien Tchoumeni joined them, but apart from the usual keeper spot – no Castilla player made it into the team. However, the opposition had a full complement of former Castilla players. Modric wore the armband for the Madrid derby.

The game started on a sad note for Real Madrid, with familiar face Alvaro Morata giving his team the lead with a beautifully executed cross. This left the visitors shocked and almost two wickets behind when Jose Jimenez headed wide. That missed opportunity did not matter much, as it was shortly after two o’clock. Antoine Griezmann nodded the ball into the corner, as Kepa Arrizabalaga could only dive low to try and prevent it from going in. Los Blancos would switch after this, and the first chance of the game blew through Luka Modric. shot. Fede Valverde had another effort on goal after a corner was headed towards goal, but it went straight into the hands of Jan Oblak. Kepa made a brilliant save to keep Real in the game, when Marcos Llorente once again peeled the ball away from the right and found an attacker inside the area. They got back into the game after Tony Cruz tussled in front of his man, before firing the ball home to score an incredible goal. Modric almost came close to equalising, but he took too long on the ball and allowed the defense to recover. It appears that Real Madrid scored a perfectly good goal just before half time, but Antonio Rudiger was ruled offside (which he was), and was heavily involved in the play (which I’m not sure he was. was) – thus the goal, which actually included David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga tapping home, was disallowed. The score remained 2-1 till the break.

If you thought the first part got off to a bad start, the beginning of the second part will shock you. Morata again found himself free in the box after some terrible saves from David Alaba, allowing him to score his second header of the game and make the score 3–1. Another former player, Mario Hermoso, hit the crossbar with a header attempt as it seemed the game was already lost. Joselu Mato did really well after setting up Rodrigo Goes for a volley, which was blocked by another substitute Aurelien Tchoumeni before firing inches wide with a superb long-range strike. Both sides managed only two shots from distance during the match as the home team managed the game well and implemented their usual tactics to good effect. The full-time whistle could not come quickly enough for some players and Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the season against their city rivals. What did you think of the game?
