Ghaziabad police on Saturday arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly killing his 60-year-old grandmother on June 8 after she refused to give him money to bet on online games.

The suspect has been identified as Vinod Kumar, who hails from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh and had been staying with his grandmother Harpyari Devi and uncles Ashok Singh and Bhagwan Singh in Arthala, Sahibabad district for about two months.

During interrogation, the police said he confessed that he used to run a fast food shop in Arthla and was addicted to online games for a year. He also revealed that he has lost a lot of money in online games and is unable to pay the rent of his fast food shop.

Kumar further told the police that on June 8 around 3 pm, he asked his grandmother for money. When she refused, he strangled her to death after an argument. Later he left the house with Rs 2000 and her earrings and opened his shop as usual.

Trans-Hindan Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimesh Patil said Ashok Kumar had initially lodged a complaint with the Sahibabad police after Devi was found unconscious. “A team was formed and Vinod was arrested after we recovered the missing earrings from his house after preliminary investigation and electronic surveillance,” he said.
