India’s star batsman Shubman Gill will unfortunately miss the opening match of the World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

Gill has been the top performer for India, scoring 1,230 runs in 20 matches at an average of 72.35 and slowly rising to the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen. He was also the leading run-scorer in India’s successful Asia Cup campaign.

Gill was battling health problems ahead of the 2023 World Cup match against Australia. The star opener fell victim to dengue after reaching Chennai.

Despite his illness, there is a possibility that he can play in the opening match. This uncertainty was confirmed by India head coach Rahul Dravid, who said that Gill’s condition is improving and the medical team is closely monitoring him. The final decision on his participation will be taken based on his recovery progress.

Rohit Sharma had also shared that they will give him enough time to recover, but he flatly refused to rule him out of the clash against Australia.

“No, it’s nothing to worry about. I mean, she’s sick. I feel for her. But you know, first of all I’m a human being, I want her to get better, not the captain. Thinking, ‘Oh, I want Gill to play tomorrow. No, I want him to recover, you know he is a young boy, his body is fit so he will be fine, he will recover quickly,’ ‘ Rohit Sharma said on the eve of the World Cup opening ceremony in Chennai.

Ishan Kishan trained hard in the nets, batted for long periods as he is being seen as a replacement for Shubman Gill if the star batsman fails to recover from his illness, India Today reported on Saturday.

Now, Star Sports has confirmed in its pre-match show that Gill did not travel with the team to Chepauk for the match.
