India vs Australia – “Nobody would want to be in Sanju Samson’s shoes”: Former Indian star on wicketkeeper’s ODI criticism

Will an average of 55.71 be enough for a player to make it to the national team in the ODI format? Under normal circumstances, yes, but things have not been quite normal for wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson. Despite his stellar performances in the 50-over format in 13 matches for the Indian team, Samson is out of the Indian squad not only for the ODI World Cup but also for the 3-match series against Australia. While his fans are criticizing the selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for this decision, some former stars are also showing sympathy towards Samson.

Robin Uthappa, who won the T20 World Cup with the Indian team in 2007, feels that it is difficult to be in Samson’s shoes at this time.

After BCCI announced the Indian squad for the 3-match ODI series against Australia, he posted on X (formerly Twitter). Uthappa wrote, “Nobody would want to be in Sanju’s shoes right now!!”

Uthappa wrote in another tweet, “The justification for this could be that even if he had been in the team, he would not have got the game. But not being in the team would also be very disappointing.”

While Samson had to be dropped from the team, Ravichandran Ashwin made a comeback into India’s ODI team, having last featured in the 50-over format for the team in January last year. Ashwin returned due to injury to Akshar Patel.

While the left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder has not been ruled out of the ODI World Cup yet, he is likely to be replaced by Ashwin in the showpiece event as well.
