To mark the 91st anniversary of the Indian Air Force, a new IAF insignia will be unveiled on the occasion of Indian Air Force Day on Sunday.
The new insignia of the IAF will be unveiled by Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary. The IAF said the new flag will include the Air Force crest on the fly side in the upper right corner of the ensign.
During the British era, the Indian Air Force was known as the Royal Indian Air Force. Its flag consists of the Union Jack in the upper left canton and the RIAF round (red, white and blue) on the fly side. After independence, the Indian Air Force flag was replaced by the Union Jack with the Indian tricolor and the RAF roundels with the IAF tricolor roundels in the lower right canton.
The IAF crest bears the national emblem, the Ashoka Lion at the top with the words “Satyameva Jeeta” in Devanagari below. Beneath the Ashoka lion is a Himalayan eagle with outstretched wings, signifying the combat characteristics of the IAF. A light blue surrounds the Himalayan eagle with the words “Indian Air Force”. The IAF motto “Nabha Sparsham Deeptam” is inscribed in golden Devanagari below the Himalayan eagle.
The motto of the IAF is taken from Chapter 24, Chapter 11 of the Bhagavad Gita and means “Pious you touch the sky” or in other words “touch the sky with glory”.
