India’s moon lander appears to be dead

Please wake up!

Last month, India became the fourth country in the world to make a soft landing on the lunar surface.

Next, the country’s Vikram lander flexed its muscles by releasing a rover and even firing its thrusters to float 15 inches above the surface before gently landing once again.

A few days later, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) team put Vikram and its accompanying Pragyan rover into sleep mode to wait for the next lunar sunrise on September 22.

Unfortunately, the pair still haven’t “reawakened” from their long night’s nap a few days later – and, as Guardian According to reports, ISRO scientists have not been able to be contacted, saying that “hopes are diminishing” for Vikram and Pragyan to wake up again.

This is an unfortunate phenomenon, highlighting the extreme conditions of the Moon’s surface, especially in the long absence of the Sun’s warm rays.

But scientists are far from saying this with certainty.

“Efforts to establish communication with Vikram lander and Pragyan rover will continue,” ISRO said. Tweeted,

According to the team, Mission Control will attempt to re-establish communications by next sunset on September 30.

ISRO chief AS Kiran Kumar said, “Until the transmitter on the lander is operational, we have no connectivity.” BBC on Monday. “It has to tell us that it’s alive. Even if all the other sub-systems work, we have no way of knowing.”

Surviving the bitter cold can be difficult, but there have been recent examples of lunar rovers surviving the harsh night. For example, China’s Chang’e-4 and Yutu-2 rovers have successfully awakened from their slumber on more than one occasion.

However, even if Vikram never wakes up again, India can count its Chandrayaan-3 mission as an unprecedented success, with the lander serving “as India’s lunar ambassador” to the Moon, according to ISRO.
