India's richest and poorest states

Per capita income in the five largest southern states Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in 1991 was lower than the national average. However, since the historic liberalization, all five of these states have grown by leaps and bounds.

However, not all of them are among the richest states in India in terms of per capita income. According to a report by the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC), these are the five richest states in India.

These are the five richest states in India:

The per capita income shown here should be read as a percentage of the national average. 100% would mean twice the national average. The five largest southern states together accounted for nearly 30 percent of India's GDP in the fiscal year ending March 2024. Interestingly, Telangana is the youngest state in India, having seceded from Andhra Pradesh on 2 June 2014.

Maharashtra is the largest contributor but its relative share in India's GDP has declined over the past decade. The state, home to the country's financial capital Mumbai, accounted for more than 15 percent of India's GDP about a decade and a half ago. Now, it is 13.3 percent.

However, the state is not in the top five in terms of per capita income. Per capita income has risen to 150.7 percent of the national average at the end of March 2024, up from 133.7 percent three years ago.

However, by 1991 the gains from the focus on agriculture had diminished. Yet, per capita is still 106%, more than twice the national average. Haryana has seen an impressive increase in per capita income of 176.8%, with most of the increase beginning at the turn of the century.
