International Day of Yoga 2024

Yoga for self and society

This year the 10th World Yoga Day is being celebrated with the theme “Yoga for Self and Society”. Yoga, a transformative process, represents the harmony of mind and body, the balance between thought and action, and the union of restraint and fulfillment. It integrates body, mind, soul and spirit, offering a holistic approach to health and wellness that brings peace to our busy lives. His transformative power is what we celebrate on this special day.

What is yoga and why do we practice it?

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit and means joining or uniting, symbolizing the union of body and mind.

Today it is practiced in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.

Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations through Resolution 69/131 declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The purpose of International Yoga Day is to create awareness around the world about the many benefits of practicing yoga.

The draft resolution establishing World Yoga Day was proposed by India and supported by a record 175 member states. The proposal was first made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, in which he said: “Yoga is a priceless gift of our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action…a holistic approach [that] Valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise. It is a way of discovering a sense of oneness with oneself, the world and nature.

The resolution notes “the importance of individuals and populations making healthy choices and adopting lifestyle patterns that promote good health.” In this regard, the World Health Organization has also urged its member countries to help their citizens reduce physical inactivity, which is one of the ten leading causes of death worldwide, and non-communicable diseases. It is an important risk factor for diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
