It's the end of the road for the two Meta Quest VR headsets

Meta is likely permanently ending stock of the Meta Quest 2, signaling the end of an era of mainstream virtual reality.

The original Quest headset also took another big step toward the digital graveyard.

The Quest 2 is out of stock at Meta's online stores worldwide, with the only notable exception being the UK, where the 128GB version is still available for £199.

The Quest 2 headset has sold over 20 million units to date, making it the most popular mainstream VR headset to date. Sony's original PlayStation VR has sold nearly five million units.

The more important question for existing Quest 2 owners is when actual support for the 2020 headset will end.

In fact, it's already started. Several games have been announced for Quest 3, but not for Quest 2, including Batman: Arkham Shadows and Alien: Rogue Incursion.

Meta is likely to implement a fairly strict support cut-off for the Quest 2 at some point in the future, as it did with the predecessor. Previously the end of support for the Quest was announced to be in 2023, and on June 29, 2024 Meta announced the end of hardware support for the headset on August 31, 2024.

“You will be able to download new apps and continue using your existing apps as long as they are supported by the developer. However, if a security vulnerability is discovered in the future, personal data stored on or accessed directly from the device will be at risk of being compromised,” Meta said in a statement.

These modern VR headsets are certainly not like the game consoles of old. However, the Quest 2 is likely to get a much longer lifetime support than the original Quest due to its massive user base.

There's a balance to be struck here – Meta will want to encourage users to upgrade to the new Quest where possible. But doing so too aggressively could result in a significant reduction in the total addressed audience.

This upgrade might not be as expensive as you might think. Meta is expected to launch a budget version of the Meta Quest 3 later this year, the Quest 3S or Quest 3 Lite. This will likely upgrade the processor and add color passthrough, without including all the expensive upgrades of the standard Quest 3.
