BOSTON (AP) — Alternative rock band Jane's Addiction has canceled its latest tour after an incident. scuffle on stage Lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro had a falling out. Farrell later apologised for “inexcusable behaviour”.
The band said, “The band has made the difficult decision to take a break as a group for a while. Therefore, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour.” a brief statement said monday.
The video shows Pharrell lunging at Navarro at a concert in Boston on Friday, pushing Navarro with his shoulder, then striking the guitarist with his right hand. Navarro can be seen extending his right hand to push Pharrell away before Pharrell is dragged away by others on stage. The show ended shortly after and the band apologized.
The band is best known for its punk-inspired hits “Jane Says”, “Been Caught Stealing” and “Just Because” in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the alternative rock and grunge music movements were on the rise. It has had three top five hits on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart.
Pharrell said in a statement provided to Variety and The New York Times, “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday's show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full responsibility for the way I chose to handle this situation.”
Perry's wife, Ettie Lou Farrell, wrote on Instagram the day after the altercation that her husband's “growing frustration as, night after night, he felt the stage volume was too loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band's noise.”
She said her husband suffered from tinnitus and a sore throat and “by the time the song was over, he wasn't singing anymore, he was just screaming to be heard.” She said her husband later broke down “and kept crying.”
The band's “Imminent Redemption” tour — which featured English rock band Love and Rockets as opening acts — began in early August and was scheduled to conclude Oct. 16 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
The North American shows marked the first time since 2010 that the original lineup of Jane's Addiction – Farrell, Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery – played multiple shows together.
Navarro, Perkins and Avery said in a statement posted on Navarro's Instagram on Monday about Farrell: “We hope he gets the help he needs.”
