Jazz unlikely to trade Lauri Markkanen amid Warriors talk – NBC Sports Bay Area and California

The Lauri Markkanen trade deal has taken a new turn — and it’s not in the Warriors or Kings’ favor.

Golden State and the Sacramento Jazz have been at the center of trade speculation regarding the forward, with reports painting the Warriors as one of the teams “aggressively” after the 27-year-old’s services.

However, Utah is “conducting their business with a 10 percent chance they're going to move him,” Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported on Wednesday. (h/t Bleacher Report)

There are several reasons why the Jazz are reluctant to lose Markkanen and why the Warriors, Kings and San Antonio Spurs have expressed interest in the Finnish star.

An NBA All-Star and winner of the 2023 Most Improved Player Award, Markkanen averaged 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game on 48 percent shooting from the field and a commendable 39.9 percent from 3-point range in 55 games for Utah during the 2023-24 NBA season.

Fisher said the Kings, who, like the Warriors, are looking for a difference-making forward this offseason, were close to securing a trade for Markkanen recently.

“To my knowledge, the Kings were close to a deal earlier this week,” Fisher said on Wednesday's episode of the “No Cap Room” podcast. “I think so, based on the conversations I've had. I can't say more than that, but there have been calls made to NBA people that indicate there have been legitimate conversations.”

Golden State didn't stand still working on a deal for Markkanen, and reportedly acquired proven sharpshooter Buddy Hield in a sign-and-trade with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 31-year-old will bring increased scoring prowess, but it's likely the Warriors will continue to look for players to complement superstar point guard Stephen Curry following the departure of Klay Thompson.

Inserting Markkanen into coach Steve Kerr’s rotation could prove difficult, but then again, the offseason is still new, and it would be unwise for the Warriors to rule him out.
