
Justice Shell Nago, Punjab and Haryana High Court
The Central Government on Thursday notified the appointment of Judge Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Shell Nago As Chief Justice Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The development comes more than six months after the Supreme Court collegium recommended the appointment of Justice Nago as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Shail Nago, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, as the Chief Justice of the High Court. Punjab and Haryana from the date on which he will take charge of his post” the Department of Justice said in a notification issued today.
Justice Nago was admitted as an advocate on 5 October 1987. He practiced civil and constitutional law at the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 27 May 2011 and became a permanent Judge on 23 May 2013.
In May this year, the central government had notified the appointment of Justice Nagoo as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Justice Nago's name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in December 2023 after the retirement of Justice Ravi Shankar Jha.
“As far as his contribution to the Judiciary in handling cases is concerned, during a tenure of over 12 years as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, he has authored more than 499 reported judgments. He has gained extensive experience in dispensing justice in the High Court. He is the senior most judge in his parent High Court. He is considered an able judge and possesses a high degree of integrity and conduct for a person holding a high judicial office.“The collegium said.
Appropriately, Justice BR Sarangi. The Orissa High Court judge was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday, six months after the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.
