Jaipur: Kirodi Lal Meena has resigned as a minister in the Rajasthan government after the BJP's poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections in the state.
During the recent elections, Meena (72) had said that he would quit the Bhajanlal Sharma government if the BJP lost any of the seven parliamentary seats under his responsibility.
The Rajasthan Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development, Disaster Management and Relief had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had allotted seven seats in East Rajasthan for which he worked hard during the elections.
But in the Lok Sabha election results announced on June 4, the BJP lost some of these seats, including its home constituency of Dosa. Overall, the BJP won 14 of the state's 25 seats, down from 24 in the 2019 elections.
An aide to the minister said, “Kirodi Meena has resigned as minister. He submitted his resignation to the chief minister 10 days ago.”
On Thursday, Meena posted the famous Ram Chatramans lines 'Raghukal reti sada chili ai, pran jai par bachan na jai' on X to highlight her unwavering determination to keep her promise at all costs.
Meena campaigned in East Rajasthan seats including Dosa, Bharatpur, Karoli-Dholpur, Alwar, Tonk-Swaymadhopur and Kotabundi.
In the results declared last month, the BJP lost Dosa, Bharatpur, Karoli-Dholpur and Tonk-Swai Madhopur.
Meena said he resigned to keep his word. No reason to be angry, I have resigned. I did not attend the recent cabinet meeting because I could have gone morally if I had resigned. I also met the Chief Minister, he respectfully said that he will not accept the resignation. ” he told a news channel on Thursday.
Meena said that he has already announced in public that he will resign if the party does not work on the seats he has worked on.
He was also in the race for the chief minister's post after the assembly election results were announced in December last year, but the party high command picked first-time MLA Bhajanlal Sharma to lead the state.
