Kuo: iPhone 16 Pro demand lower than expected, iPhone 16 Plus pre-orders rise 48%

According to new pre-order analysis from Ming Chi-Kuo, Apple is facing lower demand than expected for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. However, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have sold more than last year's iPhones.

Kuo did some analysis over the weekend, based on shipping times on Apple's website as well as “supply chain surveys.” Based on the first weekend of pre-orders, Kuo found the following:

  • The price of iPhone 16 Pro Max is 16% lower than last year
  • iPhone 16 Pro sales declined by 27% compared to last year
  • iPhone 16 Plus sales increased by 48% over last year
  • iPhone 16 sales increased by 10% compared to last year

Interestingly, it seems like people are more interested in the regular iPhones than the Pro models this year, especially the larger ones.

Overall, the iPhone 16 lineup sold a total of about 37 million units, down about 12.7% from the iPhone 15 lineup in its first weekend. Despite a huge boost with the iPhone 16 Plus, the drop in demand for the iPhone 16 Pro is far greater.

Kuo pointed out that the higher yields on the tetraprism camera (5x telephoto) are a key factor why Apple has more supply for the iPhone 16 Pro Max than it did for the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year. According to Kuo's data, Apple produced 6 million units of the iPhone 16 Pro Max ahead of launch, up 106% from last year.

The analyst also says he believes that if Apple Intelligence and other promotions have a limited impact on iPhone 16 shipments, Apple may implement more aggressive iPhone product strategies to spur market demand in 2025.
