How will Mbappe be remembered at PSG?

Mbappé is the best French player to wear the PSG shirt. It is arguably their best of all time, and perhaps their most important and influential.

Since he signed from Monaco in the summer of 2017, initially on loan and then made permanent for an astonishing €180 million (now £153.8m; $193.7m), PSG have changed. They are now an internationally recognized brand, a super club, a team with star players and Mbappé at the centre.

The relationship between PSG fans and their star player has not always been affectionate over the past seven years – as L'Equipe reported last week, this was a result of his constantly being 'near departure', which sometimes led to Whistles were blown.

But in Paris he has been loved as a leader for club and country, a locally-born superstar who has become the face of PSG. Off-field matters have not completely diminished the respect, admiration and affection for this global superstar. This is underlined by how, along with his brother Ethan, he visited the Parc des Princes on the Friday night at the time of his announcement, to meet the club's extremists – their most committed fans – for an end-of-season barbecue. Can meet.

Mbappé has left his mark on PSG. Since signing at the age of 18, he has broken many records. He has left behind all the records made before him in Paris.

He has scored the most goals for PSG both domestically and in Europe, as well as the most hat-tricks, most 'doubles' and most goals in a single game (five). He has helped France win the World Cup during his tenure at the club, as well as scoring in consecutive World Cup finals (including a hat-trick), winning the tournament's Golden Boot and captaining France. He is the most prolific goalscorer in the French league since Jean-Pierre Papin's run for Marseille in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

If he wins the Ligue 1 Golden Boot again this season (almost a certainty: he has 26 goals, second-placed Lyon's Alexandre Lacazette has 17), he will have received the award six times in a row – the most by any player. He hasn't done this before.

Mbappé would still leave without winning club football's biggest prize, the Champions League, and that will always be a disappointment for him. But he leaves a lasting impression on PSG.

Is PSG ready for his departure?

Although Mbappe's departure from PSG is yet to be official, it is not at all unexpected. Speculations about his future have been going on for years.

PSG began a process of regeneration last summer, moving on from their 'Galacticos' era. It was defined by the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Instead the focus is on a younger, more cohesive unit, built with a long-term focus and a clear playing philosophy in mind. Luis Enrique is the head coach who has been tasked with uniting that team.

PSG invested heavily to build a team designed for that new identity, spending more than €250 million on 13 new players. They made further additions in January, adding youngsters Lucas Beraldo and Gabriel Moscardo from Sao Paulo and Corinthians respectively.

While PSG will lose an elite level of talent, the idea of a “club above all” – which was emphasized by President Nasser Al-Khelaifi last summer – may be easier to implement. However, they will still look to bring in top players, including Victor Osimhen and Gavi. This is because Mbappé will leave a big hole. He is arguably the best player in the world today and remains their main source of goals.

Why did Mbappe decide to leave PSG?

This exit has been a long time coming. Mbappé has yet to confirm his next destination but it is no secret that he has been a long-time Real Madrid fan. It started with an infamous photo of Mbappé surrounded by posters of Cristiano Ronaldo in his childhood bedroom.

Since then, he has come close to advancing on several occasions. In December 2012, at the age of 14, he visited Valdebebas, Madrid's training ground. Madrid was in the news before joining PSG from Monaco. And then, over the last three years, Madrid have come close to signing him. None more so than 2022, when everyone expected Mbappé to sign for Madrid.

But then, after persuasion from the French president, he unexpectedly signed a new lucrative contract in May 2022, ahead of both the Qatar World Cup and the Olympics in Paris.

Since then sporting affairs have not gone to plan. The expected goals were not signed, mainly due to financial fair play restrictions. Shortly after his renewal, it was clear that he was unhappy. Last summer, Mbappé decided not to extend his contract until 2025 and informed the club at that time. She was put up for sale but an agreement ended the impasse. However, by that stage, his exit was clear.

During his entire time in Paris, it felt as if he was passing through; That at some point he will move forward again.

He has left his mark at France's biggest club and in French football, achieving numerous records and awards. He will regret not bringing the Champions League to Paris. But for Mbappe, now 25, it is time to move on.

Now just waiting for confirmation as to where that destination will be – PSG have always been clear that he will go to Madrid.

How did Real Madrid convince Mbappe to move?

Madrid have been interested in Mbappe for years – and his last contract extension with PSG, in May 2022, came as a disappointment for the Spanish giants.

But after some hesitation, Madrid decided last December that they would make a final decision on whether to make a final bid for Mbappé in January. Several meetings were held that month in which President Florentino Pérez insisted on a final effort. Perez has been in direct contact with Mbappe – to the extent that the forward himself told Perez he was asking for a move to PSG in May 2022.

They never fell out of touch.

Following those meetings, Madrid began negotiations with the player's entourage. His offer would be lower than the previous contracts he held, because Mbappé would be two years older, because his project was more set and because of a different economic picture in Madrid. The rising costs of refurbishing the Bernabéu will be a factor.

Nevertheless, between the signing bonus and salary, Mbappé will become the highest-paid player at Madrid. He would have to show his commitment to Madrid by accepting the offer.

There was some reluctance within Mbappé's entourage but ultimately Mbappé gave positive signals to Madrid regarding their offer. He then told them that he would inform PSG that he would leave the club in the summer – which happened in February.

Why did Madrid not announce Mbappé's arrival?

Mbappe told Madrid that he would inform PSG that he is leaving when the Spanish team is away at Leipzig for their Champions League round of 16 match. During that visit, important members of Madrid's board told head coach Carlo Ancelotti that they would be able to include Mbappé when planning the next season.

This has not changed – but there has been no internal communication confirming Mbappé's arrival. Madrid has also always officially informed that they have no interest in Mbappé.

In Germany, there was talk that Mbappé's mother Faiza Lamari – who is also his agent – had asked for discretion in the transfer matter for the safety of her son. Madrid respected those wishes and allowed Mbappé to set the pace of communication.

Madrid do not want Mbappe's arrival to divert attention from the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1. It would not be a surprise if they did not officially announce the signing of Mbappé until after that game.
