'LAC must be respected': S Jaishankar meets Chinese counterpart Wang Yi Latest News India


External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana and discussed “early resolution of outstanding issues in the border areas”. After the meeting, the Union Minister said both sides agreed to intensify efforts through diplomatic and military means to resolve the issues.

S Jaishankar further said that it is important to respect the Line of Actual Control and ensure peace in the border areas. He said that the three principles of mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual respect will guide the bilateral relations between India and China.

“Meet CPC Politburo member and FM Wang Yi this morning in Astana. Discussed early resolution of remaining issues in border areas. Agreed to redouble efforts through diplomatic and military means for this purpose. “Respecting LAC and ensuring peace and order in the border areas. Mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest will guide our bilateral relations,” he wrote on X.

Diplomatic relations between India and China soured after Beijing's forces attempted to cross the LAC in eastern Ladakh. Weeks after the standoff began, 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the line of duty while thwarting a Chinese offensive. Many Chinese soldiers were also killed in the brutal fighting.

Since then, there have been several rounds of military and diplomatic talks between the two countries.

New Delhi has said that peace and tranquility in the border areas is a condition for normal relations between the two countries.

In March, India and China discussed ways to achieve complete withdrawal and resolve issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the western sector of the border.

Earlier on Thursday, the two leaders exchanged warm handshakes and chatted for some time. Later they posed for the camera.

S Jaishankar is leading the Indian delegation to Kazakhstan at the 24th session of the SCO Council of Heads of State (SCO Summit).

On his arrival, he was received by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, Alibek Bakoy.

“It was a pleasure to meet DPM and FM of Kazakhstan Murat Nortlov today in Astana. Thank them for their hospitality and arrangements for the SCO Council of Heads of State Summit. Our expanding strategic partnership and Central Asia Discussed India's growing engagement in various forms. Views on regional and global issues,” EAM Jaishankar wrote on X.
