LeBron James told the Lakers his terms for taking a pay cut, according to report

LeBron James might be willing to take a pay cut under the right circumstances.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that James might be willing to take less money to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers if it would help him get an impact player in free agency. According to Wojnarowski, James has told the Lakers that if they find an impact player he would be willing to take less money to help make their signing easier. If the four-time MVP takes a pay cut, that could give Los Angeles the room to use the entire mid-level exception, which would be worth about $13 million.

“It looks like LeBron James is going to be a very good player year-in and year-out, but he’s telling the Lakers that if they can find an impact player at the mid-level, that player could be worth $13 million, whether it’s Klay Thompson, James Harden, Jonas Valanciunas, or maybe some other player, because this isn’t a star-studded free agency class, then he’ll take a reduced salary on his contract, which will allow the Lakers to add that salary to his payroll,” Wojnarowski said.

This is a huge addition for the Lakers. This is a weak free agent class, so the pickings are a little thin. While Thompson and Harden would be extra players, a solid center like Valanciunas would allow Anthony Davis to play away from the hoop, which is his preferred position.

The Lakers have an interesting roster surrounding James and Davis. D'Angelo Russell has opted out of his contract, while they also have Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, Cam Reddish, Jaxson Hayes, Jalen Hood-Schifino and recently drafted Dalton Knecht and Bronny James. The franchise is also very fond of Max Christie and extended him a qualifying offer, making him a restricted free agent.

Any player the Lakers add via the mid-level exception is likely to lead to other roster changes. But James' willingness to take less money has given them a great opportunity to add an impactful player.
