Bengaluru: Some senior BBMP officials may face a Lokayukta probe into the alleged misuse of funds meant for small traders. Officials on deputation from the state audit and accounts department are said to have obtained signatures of beneficiaries and transferred the money to some unauthorised organisations known to them.

The alleged scam took place between 2020 and 2021. Eight deputy finance controllers and one finance controller have been named in the report sent by Lokayukta officials to the BBMP, seeking consent to investigate the alleged scam.

BBMP Commissioner Tushar Girinath said that investigations into the misuse of funds during Covid-19 are underway. The Lokayukta has now sought the BBMP's consent to investigate the alleged transfer of funds to certain organisations under a welfare scheme for small traders.

“We have to see on what basis the allegations have been made. The Lokayukta can investigate on his own. He has asked us for a report and we will give it to him. If he is not satisfied, he will take further action. If there is prima facie evidence, we will have to give our consent for the investigation,” Girinath said.

After the matter reached the Chief Minister's Office, BBMP has been asked to submit the report by Monday.
