The incident sparked massive protests in Ratnagiri and people blocked roads demanding justice for the nursing student.

An auto-rickshaw driver allegedly drugged and raped a 19-year-old nursing student on her way home from college in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri, police said. The driver gave the girl hot water and as she lost consciousness, he took her to a secluded place and raped her.

According to police officials, the nursing student booked an auto from her college to go home when the driver attacked her. The surviving woman called her family after regaining consciousness.

The girl's family filed a police complaint on Monday. After the incident, there were massive protests in Ratnagiri and people blocked roads demanding justice.

Police are looking for the diver with the help of CCTV videos. The survivor has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

An 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the incident. The SIT will be headed by a senior woman officer.

The incident comes at a time when the nation is witnessing massive protests seeking justice for a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was gang-raped at Kolkata's government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. And was killed. Due to odd hours shifts are demanding laws to protect themselves.
