Malayalam actor Baburaj has been accused of sexual harassment by a junior artist. He has denied the allegations and alleged that industry insiders have hatched a conspiracy against him.
Malayalam actor-producer Baburaj has been accused of sexual harassment by a junior artiste, sparking a controversy in the film industry. The woman alleges that the incident took place at Baburaj's house in Aluva, where she was called on the pretext of discussing a role in a film. According to her, on reaching the house she found only Baburaj and his assistant present there, while Baburaj had claimed that a director, scriptwriter and production controller would also be present there.
In her statement, the actress recalled the horrifying experience and claimed that Baburaj later barged into the room where she was resting, used abusive language and sexually assaulted her. The woman told us, “When I reached his house, only Baburaj and his assistant were there. He gave me a room to rest, however, after a while he knocked on the door. When I opened the door, he barged into the room and locked the door, used some abusive language and attacked and sexually assaulted me. I did not complain to anyone then because he is a famous actor and I did not get anyone's support.”
She further alleged that such abuse is not uncommon in the film industry, where women are often asked if they are willing to make “adjustments” to get roles.
The actress did not immediately lodge a formal complaint due to Baburaj's fame and fear of retribution in an industry that she feels does not support victims of such incidents. However, she approached the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Kochi, who advised her to lodge a formal complaint. Despite this, she decided not to take legal action at that time.
In response to these allegations, Baburaj has strongly denied any wrongdoing and said that he will take legal action against the complainant. He has questioned the credibility of the allegations, suggesting that the actress may have been working at his resort and that these allegations are a ploy to defame him. Baburaj speculated that the timing of the allegations may be linked to his candidacy for the post of general secretary in the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), indicating a possible conspiracy by his rivals within the industry.
