Malayalam actor Mukesh, who is also an MLA in Kerala, appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Tuesday regarding the rape case registered against him. In the wake of the Hema Committee report, Mukesh was accused of rape and two cases were registered against him. On Tuesday, September 24, the Kochi City Police registered the actor's arrest and questioned him. He had already obtained anticipatory bail from a court in Kochi.
The Hindu reported that Mukesh will be released after a medical examination. The report added that the SIT team led by Coastal AIGG Ponkozali interrogated Mukesh for three hours before recording his arrest. He will undergo medical examination and after that he will be released. The media gathered outside the police station but Mukesh refused to comment on the investigation.
According to PTI, the Ernakulam District and Sessions Court granted bail to Mukesh on September 5 in connection with the rape case. An FIR was registered against Mukesh under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC. The actor-politician claimed that he was being blackmailed.
Mukesh is not the only one who has come under the scanner. An FIR has also been registered against actors Jayasuriya and Advila Babu. The FIR against Jayasuriya was allegedly registered under Section 354 of the Bharatiya Naya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with outraging the modesty of a woman. Accused have also been accused of sexual and verbal abuse.
According to India Today, the actress recorded her statement with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) after alleging verbal and physical abuse in a Facebook post.
Cases of sexual harassment have been reported in the Malayalam film industry since the findings of the Justice Hema Committee report came out earlier this month. Several actresses have accused male members of the industry of harassing them. So far 17 cases have been registered. In the wake of this, Mohanlal also recently resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA).
