Man sentenced to four months in jail for carrying 6-inch Master Sword in public place

A man was sentenced to four months in prison for carrying a six-inch master sword in a public place.

As Eurogamer reports, 48-year-old Anthony Bray, from Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England, was spotted openly carrying a replica of the iconic weapon from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series in the local town centre.

Warwickshire Police recorded Bray walking down the street with something in his hand via CCTV on June 8. Bray is said to have approached police with what was visible in his hand, whereupon he was arrested because he was carrying a bladed item.

Bray later claimed the Master Sword was a “fidget” – something to keep his hands busy – that he had bought online. But police said because it was a sharp object, it could be used as a weapon, and “could cause fear in others that it could be used against them.” Police said the Master Sword was inside a sheath and could be pulled out by pressing a button.

Although Bray acknowledged the Master Sword could be a threat if another person saw it, he insisted during interview that he would not have used it as a weapon, police said.

Bray was sentenced on June 28 and sentenced to four months in prison as well as ordered to pay a victim surcharge of 154 pounds (about $195).

It is possible to find toys that do not have six-inch blades.

Sergeant Spellman, of the Patrol Investigation Unit, commented: “We have a zero tolerance approach to bladed objects in public, and that’s what Bray is up against.

“It's possible to find toys that don't have six-inch blades. It's possible not to walk down the street holding them in front of you. With a little more self-awareness, Bray could have avoided contact with us altogether.”
