Man stabbed in massive brawl near Santa Monica Pier; 5 arrested

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) — One man suffered a stab wound, another a possible fracture of his ankle and five people were taken into custody after a fight involving about 20 people near the Santa Monica Pier Saturday afternoon.

The fight happened at 2:21 p.m., just north of the pier near Tower 14.

When officers arrived, they found one man suffering from a stab wound, but police said it did not appear to be life-threatening. According to police, another man may have broken his ankle during the altercation. Both victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

It is unclear what started the fight, but according to witnesses who spoke to Eyewitness News, some of the people involved appeared to be street vendors. Police have not confirmed this information.

“So I went over there and found out it was a fight, there were about 12 or so people,” said witness Jose Gutierrez. “They were just walking around with sticks, flags, umbrellas – whatever they could get their hands on. I saw one guy with a belt in his hand.”

Of the five people arrested, three were taken into custody on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Another was arrested on charges of assault and a fifth suspect was arrested on charges of sexual abuse, according to police.

Investigators have not released any further details. The incident is still under investigation.
