Mandaviya directs states, union territories to implement dengue prevention protocols

New Delhi: Amid rising dengue cases across the country, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation and public health preparedness. He directed the states and union territories to follow the guidelines issued by the Center for prevention and control of vector-borne diseases.

India has recorded more than 95,000 dengue cases and 91 deaths so far this year.

Mandaviya directed officials to strengthen dengue prevention, containment and management measures.

The Minister highlighted that the Central Government has provided screening kits and financial assistance to the states for fogging and IEC activities. Health workers have also been trained.

Mandaviya said adequate funds have been deployed by the Central Government to the states under the Program Implementation Plan (PIP) for procurement of Elisa based NS1 antigen testing kits for surveillance, case management, laboratory diagnosis, early diagnosis of cases.

Chhattisgarh, Delhi, North-Eastern states, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat have been particularly affected.

There are four different types of dengue virus – DENV-1 which causes classic dengue fever, DENV-2 which results in hemorrhagic fever with shock, DENV-3 which causes fever without shock, and DENV-4 which causes fever without shock or deep shock. Scientists say that this year DENV-2 is circulating which is more virulent in nature.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue virus was identified as one of the top 10 global health threats in 2019. An estimated 100–400 million infections are recorded each year, of which over 80% are generally mild and asymptomatic in nature.

Scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Sciences (ICMR) are working on developing India’s first dengue vaccine in collaboration with two pharmaceutical companies. As of now, only symptomatic treatment is given to infected people.
