Mehtab was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha.


President Draupadi Murmu on June 24 administered the oath to BJP member B Mehtab as the 'Speaker Pro-tem' of the newly constituted 18th Lok Sabha.

Seven-time MP Mehtab along with a panel of chairpersons has been tasked with running the Lok Sabha proceedings on June 24 and 25 when the winning candidates will be sworn in as members of the 18th Lok Sabha.

On June 26, he will preside over the House when the new Speaker will be elected. Mr. Mehtab was appointed by the President on June 20 along with the Panel of Chairpersons.

Leaders of the Indian bloc held a copy of the constitution and protested.

Amid the controversy over the appointment of Bhartohari Mehtab as Pro-tem Speaker, Indian Bloc leaders staged a protest in the national capital on June 24 holding copies of the Constitution in the Parliament premises.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, party leader Rahul Gandhi, and party chief Mallikarjan Kharge participated in the protest. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said, “The ruling party has not forgotten its stubbornness… We can see that they are ignoring the important issues of the country… The entire Dalit community in India has seen a historical scene.” Sakti if K Suresh had been appointed as Protem Speaker… Today, BJP has not only ignored Congress, All India and K Suresh but the entire Dalit community…”

Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav, and all other Samajwadi Party MPs arrived in Parliament this morning with a copy of the Constitution of India.

Trinamool Congress leaders Sudeep Bandhupadhyay, Kalyan Banerjee and Sugata Roy said the Modi government has violated the Constitution. “We demand the protection of the country's constitution… India and Bangladesh have agreements but they do not tell the West Bengal government, and do everything unilaterally… We need this before the 18th. It has to be protected from day one by the Lok Sabha…” said TMC MP Sudeep Bandhupadhyay.

“We are protesting because the provisions of the Constitution have been violated. The Narendra Modi government has violated the Constitution. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said that the manner in which the Protem Speaker has been appointed is There is a clear violation of constitutional provisions and a clear violation of precedents.

“We are opposing the BJP's attempts to destroy the Constitution, to amend it beyond recognition,” TMC MP Sugata Rai said.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Sakanta Majumdar mocked the leaders of the India bloc and said that this time the opposition has got more seats. That is why they are raising voice on every issue. “Bharthari Mehtab is a senior parliamentarian. He is elected MLA for 7th consecutive term. He is demanding K Suresh to be appointed pro tem speaker. He is elected for 8th time, but his term of service is not continuous… Congress has violated convention many times. People who imposed emergency should not talk about conventions.
