Miley Cyrus was sued for copyright infringement for allegedly copying Bruno Mars in the creation of her Grammy-winning hit song “Flowers.”
According to documents obtained by TMZ, Tempo Music Investments claims Cyrus' 2023 hit single shares “numerous musical similarities” to Mars' 2012 song “When I Was Your Man.”
The investment platform – which claims to own a portion of Mars' copyright of the track – alleges that the chorus, harmony, melody, chord progression and lyrics of “Flowers” were “intentionally” taken from the “24K Magic” hitmaker's song.
Mars, however, is not named as a plaintiff in the suit.
Representatives for Mars, 38, and Cyrus, 31, did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
Earlier this year, the “Malibu” singer earned her first Grammy Award when “Flowers” beat out Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish to win record of the year and best pop solo performance.
“This award is amazing, but I really hope it doesn't change anything, because my life was so beautiful yesterday,” Cyrus said in her speech accepting the Record of the Year award.
“Not everybody in the world will get a Grammy, but everybody in this world is amazing, so please don't think that's important.”
The two-time Grammy winner is rumoured to have written the song about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, to whom she was married from 2018 to 2020.
Cyrus, who has been involved with the music industry for decades, later questioned why it took her so long to receive recognition from the Recording Academy.
In an interview with W magazine in June, she said, “No doubt about it, but I've been doing this for 20 years and this is the first time I'm being taken seriously at the Grammys?”
“I had a really hard time understanding what measurement was, because if we wanted to talk about statistics and numbers, where was I? And if you wanted to talk about like impact on culture, where was I?”
However, the pop star clarified, “It's not an ego thing. I'm proud of myself.”
Cyrus got her start in the industry at age 12, starring on Disney Channel's “Hannah Montana” from 2006 to 2011.
The singer then began topping the charts with hits such as “Party in the USA” and “Wrecking Ball”.
