The education ministry announced the cancellation of the late UGC-NET exam on June 19 following input from the home ministry that the integrity of the exams had been compromised. University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA).
The development comes at a time when the NTA is mired in controversy over irregularities in the National Eligibility Entrance Test for medical and allied courses.
UGC-NET is conducted twice a year by NTA to determine the eligibility of candidates for the posts of 'Assistant Professor' and 'Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor' and admissions to Ph.D.
The exam was held on June 18 in two shifts in different cities.
“The government is committed to ensuring the sanctity of examinations and protecting the interests of students,” the education ministry said on social media platform X.
It added, “The Ministry of Education has decided to cancel the UGC-NET June 2024 exam based on the input of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is the first In view indicates that the integrity of the test may have been compromised.”
It added that a new test should be conducted, the details of which would be shared later. “The matter is being handed over to the CBI for a thorough investigation,” the ministry added.

The opposition has demanded the cancellation of NEET.
Soon after the announcement about UGC-NET, the opposition asked why NEET was not cancelled. “The cancellation of the UGC-NET exam is a victory for the spirit of millions of students,” Congress president Mallikarjan Kharge said on X, adding that it was a defeat for the “arrogance of the Modi government”.
