Monkeypox case detected in South Africa

Johannesburg, May 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) South Africa's Health Minister Joe Phahala has urged people to remain vigilant as a laboratory-confirmed case of monkeypox disease, also known as mpox, has been reported in the country.

The Phahla-led national health department said on Monday that the case involves a 35-year-old male, who lives in Gauteng province and was tested positive on May 9, 2024.

The patient had no recent travel history, Xinhua news agency reported.

The case was first tested by the Lancet Laboratory, one of the leading pathology laboratories in the country, and then confirmed by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), which then alerted the department.

“We urge the public to seek immediate treatment as soon as they notice symptoms of monkeypox,” Health Department spokesman Foster Mohale told Xinhua news agency.

According to the department, MPox is a rare viral infectious disease in humans caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV).

Although this virus is not highly contagious from person to person, it has become of increasing importance in global public health and can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever.

The department also noted that Mpox is a serious disease characterized by fever and common flu-like symptoms, followed by a blister-like rash on the skin.

It added that the disease is rarely fatal and cases usually recover within two to four weeks and most cases do not require hospital treatment.

The last time a case of monkeypox was recorded in South Africa was in August 2022 when there were cases worldwide.
