The news of the death of Dr. Navdeep Singh has created chaos in Muktsar district of Punjab. Dr Singh, who hailed from Muktsar and was a second-year MD student at Delhi's Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), was found dead on Sunday morning.
The body of 25-year-old Dr Singh, who had topped the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in 2017, was handed over to the family after post-mortem by Sunday evening. Burial will take place on Monday afternoon in Muktsar.
“When he was not picking up the call, his father sent a friend to check on him. The friend noticed that the door of his hostel room was locked from inside. It was initially learned that the deceased had died. A Delhi Police officer said that no suicide note has been found.
In June 2017, Dr. Singh grabbed headlines after securing an AIR 1 in NEET. He had said that he wanted to study in Maulana Azad Medical College because of its fee structure. He had said that cracking NEET was his main goal and hence he was satisfied with his 88% in the 12th board exams.
His father Gopal Singh, principal of a government senior secondary school in Sarainaga village in Muktsar district, earlier told The Indian Express, “I am a physics teacher, which is probably why my son got interested in the subject of science. And he wanted to be a doctor.”
Kapil Sharma, Principal, Government Senior Secondary, School, Timkot village, told The Indian Express, “When he topped the exam, people came to know about Mukatsar. Many youngsters were inspired by him and in his honour. Many events were organized in the district. We are really shocked to hear this news.”
Sharma, a family friend of Dr Singh's father, said, “Gopal spoke to Navdeep on Saturday evening and he was completely normal. He did not indicate anything that he was under any stress. He told his parents everything. We wonder how he took such an extreme step.
Dr. Singh's younger brother is also studying in a medical college in Chandigarh.
