NDA eyes change in Andhra Pradesh, Jagan Reddy hopes for 2019 repeat Important Seats, Candidates | Latest News India

25 Lok Sabha members were elected from Andhra Pradesh after intense campaigning by the YSR Congress Party, the National Democratic Alliance comprising the BJP, Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party and Pawan Kalyan's Janasena Party (JSP). The polling phase is set to take place on Monday. The Congress state assembly elections will also be held on May 13.

Andhra Pradesh Congress president and Jaganmohan Reddy's sister YS Sharmila and BJP state chief Purandeshwari (Raja Mahendravaram) are in the Lok Sabha polls.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jaganmohan Reddy's YSRCP is contesting all 25 Lok Sabha seats, while arch-rival TDP is contesting 17 Lok Sabha seats in alliance with the BJP and the Jana Sena. has been Riding on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which was vacated in the last general election, is in the fray for six Lok Sabha seats. Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan's party has been allotted two Lok Sabha seats as part of the alliance.

In 2019, the YSRCP won 22 seats while the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP won three Lok Sabha seats.

Here are the important seats in Andhra Pradesh to watch out for:


Incumbent Vijayawada MP Kesini Srinivas, who won on a TDP ticket last time, is contesting from the YSRCP. Chandrababu Naidu's party has fielded Kesini Shivanath to take on its former leader. The Congress party is hoping to make the contest triangular by fielding Veluru Bhargu from Vijayawada.


In Rajahmundry, there is a three-way contest between Congress' Gudugu Rudra Raju, BJP state president Dagubati Purandeshwari, and YSRCP's Guduri Srinivas. In January, Gudugu Rudra Raju resigned as the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). When YSR was Chief Minister, he served as the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Medical Infrastructure Corporation. Within the party, he held the post of AICC Secretary and also served as Odisha in-charge. Purandeshwari, the BJP candidate, was made the president of the Andhra Pradesh unit in the first week of July last year, replacing Somo Viraraju, who had held the post since 2020. She joined the BJP in 2014 after resigning from the Congress. Gadori Srinivas of YSRCP is contesting from the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha seat for the first time and is a political novice but a renowned pulmonologist of the city.


Kurnool, once the capital of Andhra Pradesh, will see a three-way contest between YSRCP's BY Ramaiah, TDP's Nagaraju, and Indian Bloc's PG Rampalya Yadav. Sanjeev Kumar represented Kurnool as YSRCP MP but left the party after not getting a ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In 2019, Sanjeev Kumar won the Kurnool seat by a margin of 149,067 votes. YSRCP and TDP are the main contenders from Kurnool.


The upcoming elections in Tirupati, known as the “Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh”, are contested between YSRCP's Madila Gurumurthy, BJP's Vara Prasad Rao Velgapalli, and Congress' Chanta Mohan. The YSRCP had initially nominated Kuniti Ademolam as its candidate but the disgruntled leader refused to contest. He accused Minister Pedreddy Ramchandra Reddy of cheating. Adimalam said, “I have refused the MP ticket offered by CM Jagan Reddy. I have decided not to contest as an MP, as I feel involved in corruption and negative propaganda. No interest.”


In Visakhapatnam, a key Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh, the ruling YSRCP candidate Botsa Jhansi Lakshmi is facing a stiff challenge from Telugu Desam Party's Sri Bharat and Congress's P Satyanarayan Reddy. Botsa Lakshmi, wife of senior YSRCP leader Botsa Satyanarayana, is pitted against actor Nandamuri Balakrishna's son-in-law Sri Bharat. In the 2019 elections, YSRCP's MVV Satyanarayana won by a narrow margin, defeating TDP's Bharat Muthukamali in a close contest.


A high-profile fight is set to erupt in Kadapa as Congress state unit chief YS Sharmila is pitted against her cousin and incumbent YSRCP MP YS Avinash Reddy. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy and APCC Chief YS Sharmila's mother YS Vijayalakshmi have appealed to the people of Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency to support their daughter in the upcoming elections. Vijayalakshmi resigned from the post of YSRCP honorary president and core party membership in July 2022.
