Stones pelted on the convoy of BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh in Bardhaman-Durgapur seat

Several incidents of violence were reported in West Bengal, where people are voting in eight constituencies today in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections. While election officials have claimed that voting has been peaceful, various political parties have reportedly filed around 1,088 complaints of EVM malfunctions and agents have been barred from entering the booths.

Clashes broke out between ruling Trinamool Congress and BJP workers in some areas of Burdhman-Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency. In Kalna Gate, BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh faced protests when he was going to the poll booth after receiving some complaints. Trinamool supporters blocked their way and protested, raising slogans of 'go back'. Stones were also pelted on the BJP leader's convoy and some cars were damaged.

Footage obtained by NDTV shows paramilitary personnel trying to control the crowd. Soon after, a group of people pelted stones at Mr. Ghosh's car. A security guard suffered a head injury and somehow managed to get into the NDTV vehicle, bleeding from his wound. NDTV's cameraman was hit by a stone on his leg.

The random scenes were a far cry from the show of friendship between Mr Ghosh and his main rival, the Trinamool's Kirti Azad, earlier in the day. The two leaders embraced each other during a visit to a poll booth, a rare sight in an election characterized by leaders from the ruling Trinamool and the BJP, its main challenger.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Ghosh told the media that “TMC goons” were preventing polling agents from entering the booths.

“When I went to the village, women folded their hands and asked me if they would be able to vote. It is their (Trinamool's) habit to threaten people. TMC goons are not allowing polling agents into the booths. According to news agency ANI, they threatened people last night not to come out to vote.

The Trinamool has accused Mr Ghosh of trying to spoil the atmosphere “because he feels defeated”.

Clashes were also reported in Birbhum and Krishnanagar constituencies, where BJP workers clashed with Trinamool supporters. BJP candidate Amrita Roy, who is taking on firebrand Trinamool leader Mehwa Moitra Krishnanagar, was seen walking to the police station with two injured supporters. A CPM worker was injured in a scuffle with Trinamool supporters while present at the polling booth in Tehhata area of the constituency. In some areas of Birbhum, Trinamool activists staged protests, accusing central forces of voter intimidation.
