Black Myth: Wukong is the biggest game in the world with 10 million copies sold almost instantly. But none of them are on Xbox.
Despite launching on both PC and PS5 at launch, and without a PlayStation exclusivity deal, the game is not available on Xbox, apparently for technical reasons. We've received little information on the nature of this, with many instinctively blaming the Xbox Series S for it, but now we may know a little more.
According to Spanish Xbox leaker eXtas1s, he claims to have spoken to Xbox developers at Gamescom about the nature of the problem and a timeline for a solution:
“The game reportedly suffers from a bug called a “memory leak,” which can cause critical crashes that can compromise the performance of your Xbox console. Due to this issue, the game hasn’t passed Xbox’s bug detection test and has therefore been delayed indefinitely until they manage to optimize the game for Series X|S.
The studio is already working hard to solve this problem and get the necessary certification. Once they get approval, they plan to set a release date for the game, but they don't know when or how yet, but other than that error the game is “close to being ready.”
So, the idea here is that the memory leak is specific to Xbox for some reason and it's not easy to fix, given the very unfortunate delay here as Microsoft didn't need a situation where they didn't have access to one of the biggest games of the year while their competitor didn't even buy a timed exclusive deal to keep it away from them. You may recall that something similar happened with Baldur's Gate 3 last year, although that was more about the Xbox Series S not being able to do split-screen multiplayer.
I'll come back to what happened Officially A lot has been said about this. Here is a statement from Game Science that talks about optimization:
“We are currently optimising the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards,” Game Science said, “so it will not release simultaneously with other platforms. We apologise for the delay and aim to minimise the wait for Xbox users. We will announce a release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.”
And then here's the official Xbox line with even less detail, and Microsoft won't say anything more when asked. I've tried:
“We're excited about the launch of Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and looking forward to working closely with Game Science to bring the game to our platform. We can't comment on deals our partners have made with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the heart of that.”
So that's all we have, and a harmful memory leak could be the cause. Hopefully it will be fixed soon and Xbox players will get a much-needed win after a tough year. Or at least a much-needed tie.
