New report shows menopause is impacting women’s careers, with 80% of women citing it as a workplace challenge

A long list of work interferences was reported by women in both countries, with loss of concentration at the top for US (42%) and UK (56%) respondents. To manage their symptoms at work, most women (54%) reported needing to make changes to their work routine. Top actions include reducing hours, changing careers, moving from full to part-time work, changing to a less demanding job, and quitting. In particular, women of color are more likely to consider shifting from full-time to part-time to manage menopause; Relatedly, they are also more likely to feel that menopause could harm career development, including 58% of black UK women, compared with 32% of white UK respondents and 22% of white US women. Stigma and ageism around coping with menopause are both evident in the workplace
The majority of women surveyed experience stigma associated with coping with menopause in the workplace, with 54% feeling uncomfortable asking their employer for workplace benefits or support to address menopause challenges. The top reasons include the perception of being unable to manage job responsibilities, overall stigma, and uncertainty over who or how to ask for support.

Nearly half of all respondents (47%) shared that they have experienced ageism at work. This is slightly more common for US women (50%) versus UK women (44%). Overall, 44% say they experience more ageism than male colleagues. Women of color are more likely to experience ageism and receive criticism.

Despite their silence on the topic, almost all respondents (90%) agree that greater public awareness and discussion about menopause, symptoms and their impact on women would help generate additional support. Methodology
