Soon after India defeated South Africa in a thrilling match in Barbados, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that cricketers have won the hearts of crores of Indians.

Calling the match historic, he said on X, “Champions! Our team will bring home the T20 World Cup in style! We are proud of the Indian cricket team.”

As soon as the match ended at around 11.30 pm Indian time in Barbados, jubilant fans took to the streets and burst firecrackers. The cricket-loving nation celebrated the victory and the celebrations continued for several hours even after midnight.

In Delhi, a large number of people gathered at India Gate to celebrate the occasion.

At the Mumbai airport, fans were seen dancing to the beats of dhols and many climbed on top of vehicles on the streets. In Kolkata, the streets were filled with firecrackers and screams and whistles of uncontrollable fans. In Bengaluru, many fans dressed in Team India uniforms were seen dancing outside pubs and food shops.

Social media was flooded with congratulatory messages and pictures of celebratory scenes as the star-studded Indian team defeated South Africa by seven runs in a topsy-turvy final.

“We are very happy. I was a kid when we won last time. My throat is sore from shouting but we will celebrate for two days,” a cricket fan told PTI.

In Jammu, children and the elderly celebrated with fireworks and shouting slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. “The whole country is celebrating. It is like Diwali for us,” said one person.

In Hyderabad, jubilant scenes were witnessed outside the state secretariat amid dazzling fireworks. People climbed on the roofs of trucks, cars and other vehicles and honked horns in joy.

Many people praised the contribution of all the players of Team India and coach Rahul Dravid.

One of the greatest cricketers of all time, Sachin Tendulkar, in an emotional message on X, said, “Every star on Team India's jersey inspires the dream kids of our country to move one step closer to their dreams. India has got its fourth star, our second star in the T20 World Cup.”

“The circle of life has come full circle for Indian cricket in the West Indies. From our worst performance in the 2007 ODI World Cup to becoming a cricket superpower and winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. Very happy for my friend Rahul Dravid who missed out on winning the 2011 World Cup but his contribution to this T20 World Cup win is huge. I am very happy for him…

He said, “It was wonderful to see Team India excel under the guidance of this class of 96. It was a complete team effort. Heartiest congratulations to all the players, coaches, support staff and @BCCI.”
