No going back to jail if you choose AAP: Arvind Kejriwal's pitch

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal – out of Tihar Jail on interim bail – told people in a road show today that if they vote for him, he will not have to go back to jail. “I have to go back to jail after 20 days,” the chief minister said. If you choose Jhadu (your mark), I will not have to go to jail again.”

Mr. Kejriwal's return to the heat and dust of the election campaign after 50 days in jail has reinvigorated the AAP, which was struggling to put out fires on multiple fronts. Senior party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj said it would also be a “game changer” for the India bloc.

Fresh from jail, the chief minister went on the campaign trail, holding a road show in support of Somnath Bharti, the party's candidate for the New Delhi seat in Motinagar. And there, he told the crowd that his absence would reflect what he had done for the people.

“If I go back to jail, the BJP will stop your work, make electricity free, destroy schools and close hospitals and neighborhood clinics,” the chief minister told his Punjab colleagues. Mansab said along with Bhagwant Maan. “They sent me to jail because I worked for you. BJP doesn't want the work of Delhiites.”

The seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi will go to polls on May 25.

The AAP chief arrested in the Delhi liquor policy case is out on interim bail till June 1, the day voting for the Lok Sabha polls ends. He must surrender on June 2.

The Supreme Court, which was hearing a challenge to Mr. Kejriwal's arrest, unexpectedly sought to hear his bail plea as well. Releasing him on bail, the judges said he was not a “habitual criminal” and pointed to the ongoing elections.

A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Dutta said, “There are elections (and) these are exceptional circumstances, and he is not a habitual offender. It is a question of public interest.”
