Olivia Munn reveals she had a total hysterectomy while battling breast cancer: 'Best decision I ever made'

Olivia Munn revealed she had a total hysterectomy in April during her battle with breast cancer.

Speaking to Vogue in a profile published on Sunday, she said: “I have now had an oophorectomy and a hysterectomy. I had my uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries removed.

She described the life-changing decision as the “best” one for her after her doctor suggested her body stop producing estrogen – which luminal B breast cancer feeds on and grows – to prevent the cancer from returning.

The actress has a son with partner John Mulaney.

“It was a big decision, but it was the best decision for me because I needed to be there for my family,” the 43-year-old told the outlet.

“Some of my friends were trying to cheer me up, saying, 'Malcolm won't remember this. Don't worry.' But I just kept thinking in my mind, 'I will remember that I missed all these things.' This is her childhood, but this is my motherhood, and I don't want to miss any part of it if I don't have to.”

This will be the fifth surgery in the actress' cancer journey as before this she had undergone a complete double mastectomy, a lymph node dissection, reconstructive surgery and a nipple deferment.

Before the surgery, she was taking a medication that left her bedridden.

Before her hysterectomy, the mother of one — who welcomed son Malcolm with John Mulaney in November 2021 — was previously taking Lupron to suppress estrogen in her body.

However, the side effects of the medication left her bedridden, as she described it, “This was next-level, debilitating exhaustion.”

She added, “I would wake up in the morning and need to go back to bed almost immediately. If you asked Malcolm, 'Where does Dad work?' He would run to his desk, and if you asked him, 'Where does Mom work?' He will point towards my bed. it was very nice. But at the same time, it was breaking my heart because this is my image of them.”

Munn expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and Mulaney for their support.

In the interview, Munn also revealed that she has frozen her eggs for the third time. Earlier she had done this when she was 33 and 39 years old.

“After my diagnosis, we decided to try another round of egg retrieval and hoped it would be a good month,” she said.

“John and I talked about it a lot and we didn't feel like we had expanded our family, but didn't know that I would have to have chemotherapy or radiation.”

Despite testing negative for the BRCA gene and receiving a clear mammogram at the time, her doctor calculated her breast cancer risk assessment score, which was 37 percent.

Following an MRI, she was diagnosed with Luminal B cancer in both breasts, an “aggressive, fast-growing cancer”.

Throughout her journey, Munn has been vocal about her gratitude for her family, friends, and Mulaney, 41.

The couple have been together for three years and will make their red carpet debut in January.
