On camera, a family of 7 is swept away by a swollen waterfall near Mumbai.

In less than a minute, the sheer force of the rushing water swept them away.

A man, a woman and children were swept into the water clinging to them in the middle of a raging waterfall in Lonavala near Mumbai. Only two of them managed to swim back.

The family of seven was vacationing in Hill Station, just 80 km from Mumbai. Three bodies have been recovered so far and search and rescue operations will resume early tomorrow morning.

Like hundreds of tourists who visit this hill town during the monsoon, the family went for a picnic at the waterfall near the backwaters of Bhosi Dam this afternoon. The dam overflowed due to heavy rain in the area since early morning, which increased the flow of water in the waterfall.

Horrifying scenes of the family's final moments show them clinging to each other and standing on a rock in the middle of a senseless waterfall, hoping to drift against the tide and toward land.

In less than a minute, the sheer force of the rushing water overcame them and swept them away as they screamed and yelled for help.

Other tourists also gathered on the shore and called for help, but the high water made it impossible for anyone to jump.

The incident took place around 1:30 pm today. Locals and police rushed to the spot and started searching for survivors with ropes and trekking gear.

According to police, the tourists slipped into a waterfall and drowned, according to news agency PTI. According to a report by news agency IANS, locals said they may have slipped on the rough stones at the base of the falls and been swept away by the force of the water.

The accident has raised concerns about safety arrangements downstream of the falls and Bhusi Dam.

Another purported video from the same location shows hundreds of people sitting on the edge of the dam and on its wall as the water flows. Food and drink stalls were seen in the middle of the falls as tourists were seen without any concerns about the safety of the tourists in the flowing waters. No security measures were also seen in the area to prevent tourists from visiting the area. However, NDTV could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
