OpenAI has started rolling out an advanced voice mode for premium users of its AI chatbot ChatGPT. The audio feature is said to be more natural and immersive and will be released over the course of the week.
The AI firm has said that the feature is not yet available in EU countries including Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein or the UK. After ChatGPT Plus and Teams customers, the feature will be released for Enterprise and Edu users from next week.
“Hope you've found the wait worthwhile,” CEO Sam Altman said when announcing the feature on X.
ChatGPT will also get five new voices that users can test out – Arbor, Maple, Soul, Spruce, and Veil, bringing the total number of voice options to nine.
OpenAI announced the advanced voice feature in May, but the rollout was delayed after actress Scarlett Johansson alleged that the demo voice called Skye closely resembled her voice in the 2013 film “Her”. Though the company responded to the claim by saying it had not based the voice on Johansson's, its use was halted after their legal counsel sent a letter of no-confidence.
For premium subscribers, they will need to open the ChatGPT app to receive a notification once they turn on access to the new feature. Then, the user can click on 'Continue' to proceed. Once they start a new chat, a microphone icon and a sound wave icon will appear next to the 'Message' field.
After a few seconds a small bump sound will be heard followed by a circle appearing in the middle of the screen which changes to a sky blue and white animation. The bot then responds. Users can choose a different accent or increase the speed of the conversation.
