Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains have been lashing Kerala for the past 24 hours as Southwest Monsoon has intensified over the Kerala coast under the influence of westerly winds. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday. Several districts have been kept under yellow alert as rain continues at many places.
In Kottayam, the District Collector declared a holiday for all educational institutions including professional colleges on Wednesday. According to reports, heavy rain has continued in the district since Tuesday night. In Idukki, the District Collector announced that all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Devi Kalam Panchayat will remain closed on Wednesday.
In Ernakulam, landslides were reported in hilly areas and normal life was disrupted due to water logging. After the water level in the Periyar river rose, the shutters of the Kalrakti and Pambala dams in the river were opened on Wednesday morning. People approaching the banks of the Periyar river have been advised to be vigilant.
Kozhikode and Kannur districts in North Kerala have reported several losses due to heavy rain. A car was destroyed when a compound wall collapsed during rains in Kannur.
Flooding is reported in the Thattalapalam river in Kozhikode.
In Thrissur, sea intrusion damaged a road and more than 40 houses were submerged in Vadanapally's Faisal Nagar. Residents here complained that the authority was not taking any action to build 'gravefields' (plimates) on the beach to prevent sea attacks.
