Pakistan and Bangladesh have been fined and docked World Test Championship points for slow over-rates in the first Test in Rawalpindi, which the visitors won by 10 wickets.
Pakistan were deducted six WTC points and fined 30 per cent of their match fee for falling six overs short of the target. Bangladesh were deducted three WTC points and fined 15 per cent of their match fee for falling three overs short. This was Bangladesh's first deduction in this WTC cycle, while Pakistan had already been deducted two points during the 2023 Perth Test.
As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over they fail to bowl in the stipulated time. Additionally, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions, a side is penalised one point for every over they bowl short. Both captains, Shan Masood and Nazmul Hossain Shanto, pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted match referee Ranjan Magugale's sanctions.
Meanwhile, veteran Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan was separately fined 10 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) in an improper and/or dangerous manner at or near a player, player support staff, umpire, match referee or any other third person during an International Match”.
The incident occurred in the 33rd over of Pakistan's second innings when Shakib mistimed the ball towards batsman Mohammad Rizwan, who was not ready to face Shakib's next delivery. The 37-year-old accepted the punishment for his first offence in this 24-month period during which demerit points are accumulated.
The charges were laid by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Rashid Riaz.
