Persistent sore throat may be a sign of an STI; 5 other unusual symptoms you should know health News

Detecting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be challenging because their symptoms vary widely and can often be mistaken for other health problems.

While many STIs have obvious and well-known signs, some warning signs are less common but equally important to recognize, according to Dr Chetna Jain, Director-Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Sector 14, Gurgaon. It is important to catch these signs early.

Why early detection matters

  • Preventing complications: Untreated STIs can lead to serious health consequences, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and chronic pain.
  • Reduction in transmission risk: Early diagnosis and treatment helps prevent the spread of infection to sexual partners.
  • Improves quality of life: Addressing symptoms promptly can reduce discomfort and prevent more serious health problems.

Here are six unusual warning signs of an STI

Dr. Jain shares six unusual warning signs of STIs:

unusual skin rashes or sores

Skin rashes or sores that appear on parts of the body other than the genital area may indicate an STI. For example, syphilis, which progresses in stages, can cause a rash that covers large areas of the body, including the torso, arms, and legs. These rashes can range from small spots to large spots and are often painless. If you notice such rashes or sores, especially unexplained or persistent, it is important to consult a healthcare provider to rule out or confirm an STI.

persistent sore throat

A sore throat that doesn't go away with normal treatments can be an unusual sign of an STI, especially if you've had oral sex. STIs like gonorrhea and chlamydia can infect the throat, causing symptoms like persistent sore throat, redness, or discomfort. This condition, known as pharyngeal gonorrhea, can be overlooked because it mimics common throat infections, but if diagnosed early it can be treated effectively with antibiotics.

eye irritation or discharge

Although less common, eye infections due to STIs can occur when infected fluids come in contact with the eyes. For example, chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause conjunctivitis, which presents with symptoms such as redness, irritation, and discharge from the eyes. This condition may be mistaken for conjunctivitis caused by other factors such as allergies or bacterial infections. If recent exposure or other symptoms are present, STI testing should be considered.

persistent fatigue or malaise

Feeling unusually tired or experiencing a general feeling of being unwell can sometimes be associated with an STI such as HIV or chronic hepatitis. These infections can cause systemic symptoms that affect energy levels and overall health. Chronic fatigue for no apparent reason or that persists despite adequate rest and nutrition may indicate an underlying STI. It is important to monitor these symptoms and seek medical advice to manage the infection and its effects on overall health.

Unexplained swelling or pain in non-genital areas

Some STIs can cause symptoms beyond the genital area. For example, gonorrhea can cause arthritis-like symptoms, causing swelling, pain, and discomfort in joints such as knees, elbows, or wrists. This condition, known as disseminated gonococcal infection, may not immediately indicate an STI, especially if the symptoms are joint-related. Recognizing this connection and seeking medical evaluation can help effectively diagnose and treat STIs.

changes in menstrual cycle

For people with a uterus, certain STIs like chlamydia and gonorrhea can disrupt the menstrual cycle. This disruption may manifest as irregular bleeding, increased menstrual pain, or other changes in menstrual patterns. These changes can often be attributed to factors such as stress or hormonal fluctuations, but STI testing should be considered if additional symptoms or risk factors are present.
